The sheep Dolly (1996–2003) became famous as the first mammal to be created through an artificial cloning process. The British researchers used the first name of the prominent country singer Dolly Parton without her permission. Even though reactions at the time were, at the very least, controversial, from today’s perspective this must clearly be interpreted as a devaluation of specific physical characteristics in humans (in this case, a woman’s breasts). Against the backdrop of current discussions regarding the exploitation of the female body in the context of artificial reproductive methods, such gestures call objective research into question.

Dolly is part of Joachim Blank’s G.E.O. series, in which images of photographs from an archive of *Geo* magazines dating from 1976 to 1999 are used and placed in a contemporary context. Dolly itself is also a series of three cloned images depicting a sheep. Biological cloning techniques have shown that identical copies cannot exist in nature, since the contexts outside the body cannot be reproduced in artificial cloning. Cloned images behave in exactly the same way: through a different context and material transformations, references are preserved, but they are updated and enable new levels of reflection.
